Assessment & Planning

Inventory and Assessment

  • Forest Inventory: Assess the current state of the forest, including tree species, age classes, and health.
  • Wildlife Assessment: Identify wildlife species present, their habitats, and any sensitive areas that need protection.
  • Soil and Water Analysis: Evaluate soil types, erosion risks, and water sources to understand how logging might impact them.

Define Objectives

  • Timber Goals: Outline the volume and types of timber to be harvested.
  • Conservation Goals: Set objectives for wildlife habitat preservation, soil conservation, and water protection.

Develop a Management Plan

  • Harvesting Method: Choose appropriate methods (e.g., selective cutting, clear-cutting, shelterwood) based on the objectives.
  • Timber Sale Contracts: Prepare contracts specifying terms, conditions, and practices for the harvest.

Site Preparation

Designate Harvest Areas:

  • Mark Boundaries: Clearly mark areas for harvesting, buffer zones, and sensitive habitats.
  • Create Access Roads: Plan and construct access roads in a way that minimizes environmental impact.

Implementation

Logging Operations:

  • Machinery and Equipment: Use machinery suited to the terrain and minimize soil disturbance.
  • Traditional Equipment: Use Horse and no invasion resources
  • Skid Trails and Roads: Maintain these to reduce erosion and minimize habitat disruption.

Post-Harvest Activities

Restoration and Replanting:

  • Compliance Check: Ensure that logging operations followed the plan and regulations.
  • Replanting: Replant native trees and vegetation as needed to restore the forest.
  • Habitat Enhancement: Implement measures to enhance wildlife habitat, such as creating brush piles or planting cover crops.
